Alex Smith is a native of East Tennessee and currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He has honed his skill at Carson Newman University, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in 2010, and at The New York Academy of Art, where he completed his Master of Fine Arts Degree in 2015. In between, he worked at his studio in Knoxville’s Emporium and studied at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Idaho studio of Scott Christensen. He was the featured artist at Knoxville’s 2013 Dogwood Arts Festival and has presented his work at a variety of private galleries and juried exhibitions from Knoxville to New York.
In 2015, he was awarded an Artist’s Teaching Residency at the Altos de Chavon School of Art and Design in The Dominican Republic. Whether giving traditional landscapes a contemporary edge, or finding beauty in the grit of the city, his passion continues to be the intricate detail, light, and color of realism.
He is currently represented by Bennett Galleries in Knoxville and the Panepinto Gallery in Hoboken, NJ. His work may also be viewed at his studio in Brooklyn, by appointment.
